Cheesecake is a very popular delicacy nowadays, a constant star of every coffee house, but I think few people knew (including me) that it does not really originate from New York, or from the Anglo-Saxon countries. The first "cheesecake" was made in ancient Greece, on the island of Samos, around 2000 years BC. The proof of this is a 4000-year-old cheese mold, which was excavated on the island. It was consumed with great pleasure, because it proved to be an excellent source of nutritious food. During the first Olympic Games (776 BC), this was given to the competitors, but it also shone at weddings, as a wedding cake. It consisted of simple ingredients: flour, wheat, honey and cheese, which were formed into a cake and baked. The oldest known and surviving recipe dates back to 230 AD. This is also a very simple, but already a more advanced recipe: the cheese was pounded until it became soft and stringy; honey and flour were added to this, which was heated and then allowed to cool, and served this way.
