The moderately thin skin has a vibrant red-orange hue when ripe, and contains many volatile essential oils. The pale orange-yellow flesh is soft, juicy, and seedless. It is aromatic and has a low acidity, resulting in an overall sweet taste.
The orange is one of the most popular citrus fruits, and fresh orange juice is a staple of many breakfast tables. Oranges are native to Asia, particularly southern China, India, and Southeast Asia, and are a hybrid fruit that was first developed around 2500 BC. These fruits do not grow wild, and were introduced to the Mediterranean region in the 1400s by traders returning from their travels to Asia.
Fun fact
The orange originated in Southeast Asia, and traces of it have been found in China as early as 2500 BC. It probably reached Europe with the help of Alexander the Great. Its name comes from the Arabic word "narange", which became widespread in the 14th century. In many languages, it is called the Chinese apple.
