Silly Scotch whisky malt brown craft ale premium Belgian beer 8% alc.
Brown ale made from strong Scottish whisky malt, premium Belgian beer. Silly Scotch was born from a unique tradition and over the years has become the reference beer for its particular style. Its beautiful red colour, with more than a hint of copper, is hidden under a beige head.
Its complex aromas evoke the scent of brioche, accompanied by raisins, fruit jam and fresh raspberries. It is a generous, full-bodied beer, reminiscent of liqueur. The initial, most striking impressions are the effects of honey and caramel. The aftertaste is dominated by the flavours of prunes and roasted malt. It has a refreshing aftertaste.
Producer information
In the 19th century, the large farms of Hainaut brewed barley and hops, initially for their seasonal workers. Silly, a village of 8,000 inhabitants located in the triangle of Ath, Enghien and Soignies, is crossed by the Sylle, which gives it its name. It was in Silly that Marcelin Hypolite Mynbrughen, originally called Cense de la Tour, founded the Silly brewery in 1850. In 1900, Marcelin's son, Adelin, won a silver medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition.
From 1947, the Brewery took over the farm. At that time, it only produced top-fermented beers such as Grisette, Saison and Scotch. The brewery, which had a network of cafés, started producing Pils bottom-fermented beer in 1950. The year 1975 was marked by the takeover of the Tennstedt Decroes Brewery in Enghien, which enabled the addition of the Double Enghien family to the range, initially available in blond and brown top-fermented beers. The Enghien range is currently available in four beers: Enghien blonde, Enghien brune, Enghien Noël and Enghien aged in cognac barrels. In 1990, the Blanche Titje and the Divine were created. In 2004, a fruity white beer with pink grapefruit was born: Pink Killer.
The Silly SA brewery is run by the 6th generation of the family. Cousins Lionel and Bertrand Van der Haegen are at the helm. Bertrand manages production and Lionel manages sales. Their parents, brothers Jean-Paul and Didier Van der Haegen, are still very active on the board of directors.
The Silly brewery is experiencing strong growth, driven in particular by its exports and its reputation for quality. From a production of 10,000 hectolitres in 2008, brewing increased to more than 25,000 hectolitres in 2018. The market is buoyant: Belgian craft beers are enjoying growing success in many countries on five continents.
