Arnold Sørensen, a Scandinavian businessman, founded a company in Riga that produced canned goods, fruit preserves, vegetables and fish.
1920
After the First World War, a flying seagull with fish in its beak became the company's trademark, and KAIJA (meaning "seagull" in Latvian) became the company's trademark.
1938
The total value of the goods produced reached 3 million euros (in today's value). The company employs 360 people and exports its products to Europe and the USA. They win various awards at international exhibitions and fairs
1966
The company is called the "Experimental Factory of Canned Fish and Culinary Products" and exports its products throughout the Soviet Union. It covers an area of 11 hectares and employs 720 people.
2003-2004
The company goes through bankruptcy and reorganization, the Arnold Sørensen and Kaija brands are retained. There are only 4 export markets left when the company resumes its activities
2013
5 million euros are invested in the renovation of the production area and new production lines
2017
Karavela becomes one of the largest canned fish producers in Europe, producing 56 million cans per year and having 40 export countries worldwide
2019
Karavela acquires Larsen Danish Seafood, thus increasing its position in the German market
