When ripe, the base colour of the Williams pear is yellow, slightly reddish on the sunny side and easy to peel. It has a characteristic sweet and sour flavour, which is why it can be an excellent complement to cheeses or other salty foods. Its shape is almost a regular pear. The surface of the fruit skin is slightly wavy, thin-skinned. Its calyx is shallow, its cup is open, its stalk is medium-long. Its flesh is white, melting, juicy, fragrant, sweet-sour in flavour, with a muscat flavour. The thirst-quenching sweet-sour flavours of Williams pears serve as a refreshing, pleasant delicacy on their own, but they also go well as elements of desserts, salads, or with meat.
Williams pears bear their beautiful large fruits, which can weigh up to 220 grams per piece, at the end of August. They are rich in antioxidants, nutrients, and we can also find plenty of flavonoids in them. In addition, they are not lacking in vitamins either, and according to studies, their regular consumption reduces the chances of obesity, thus diabetes and heart attack. Of course, the characteristic fibre content of pears contributes to this, which has a beneficial effect on the intestinal system and also reduces the burden on the stomach.
With its muscat, piquant flavours, the yellow Williams pear is a popular delicacy in late summer and early autumn. Freshly picked, it can last for months and can be given as a healthy dessert to babies and children.
