Ginger is one of the most magnificent healing spices. It was used in China centuries before Christ. It played a significant role in the spice trade in the Middle Ages.
Preparation suggestion
- 200 g ginger, thickly sliced
- 2 large lemons - the peel for the syrup, the juice squeezed into the finished drink
- 75 g golden brown sugar
- 100 g muscovado sugar
- Ice
- 1 liter soda or carbonated water
- Put the ginger in a saucepan with the lemon peel, the two types of sugar and 500 ml of water, then stir over a low heat until the sugar dissolves. Then increase the heat to medium and cook for another 15-20 minutes, until the water has boiled off and it becomes syrupy. Remove from the heat and allow to cool completely.
- Filter the syrup into a jug through a fine-mesh sieve. (If you like, you can transfer the syrup to a small sterilized jar or preserving jar and keep it in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.) Pour in the lemon juice, fill with ice and top up with the soda water.
Interesting fact
It contains significant amounts of vitamins A, C, E and B, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, iron and zinc. Most people know it for its stomach-soothing and digestive-improving effects. It reduces fever and relieves coughing, and also has antimicrobial effects.
Use
It can be used in a variety of ways, in soups, meat dishes, cakes, and can also be used to make tea. It has beneficial effects whether consumed fresh, dried or ground, or even in the form of oil or dietary supplements.
Storage
Store in a dry, cool place between 5-10 °C.
