Producer information
Andries Van Doorselaer and Joanna Van Accoleyen were originally from Malderen, where they also married in 1691, but moved their family and business to neighbouring Steenhuffel. Van Doorselaer started renting a brewery next to the church sometime before 1698; however, he was able to open his own brewery when he bought the property De Hoorn on the other side of the street in 1706. His entrepreneurial spirit was unstoppable, in any case.
In 1801, De Hoorn was sold at public auction. Jan Baptist De Mesmaecker and Clara Bastaerts made the highest bid and became the new owners. In 1908, their daughter Henriette De Mesmaecker married Arthur Van Roy, a descendant of a brewing family from Wieze. Arthur initiated the industrial development of the brewery so that he could sell his beers far beyond the borders of the municipality. He also created his own “Spéciale Belge” brew.
Later, after the outbreak of the First World War, De Hoorn Brewery was not spared either. In 1914, the brewery was almost completely destroyed in a bombing raid. During the reconstruction, it proved impossible to invest in the cooling technology needed to brew the increasingly popular bottom-fermented pilsner beers. The brewery therefore continued to brew top-fermented beers out of necessity. In 1929, Arthur Van Roy gave the “Spéciale Belge” the brand name “Spéciale PALM” as a sign of the victory of top-fermented beers over bottom-fermented pilsners. He was convinced that the Spéciale PALM offered more aroma and flavour than the pilsners.
The brewery survived the Second World War unscathed and then began to expand. This growth was due in no small part to the growing success of the “Spéciale PALM”. To celebrate the brewery's bicentenary in 1947, Alfred Van Roy, the son, released the Dobbel PALM, a slightly rounder, festive beer that has since become the beer for the festive season.
The brewery continued to develop in the sixties. When the local beer culture returned to Belgium after the student revolts of 1968 and the Flower Power movement, Alfred Van Roy was the leading player in this, achieving the greatest growth with his Special PALM Brabant-style amber beer. The public increasingly referred to De Hoorn Brewery as the PALM Brewery.
In 2014, Palm Breweries was renamed Palm Belgian Craft Brewers. A new microbrewery, named in honour of De Hoorn, was opened to experiment with new combinations of herbs, spices, hops, fruit and wood. At 10 hl, the capacity of the microbrewery is almost exactly the same as that of the old village brewery. In 2016, the Dutch Swinkels brewing family acquired a majority stake in Palm Belgian Craft Brewers.
