Grapefruit is a great addition to any healthy diet. Their sweet and tangy flavor makes them a favorite for breakfast fruit and summer snacks. Not everyone enjoys the characteristic bitterness of these juicy citrus fruits, however, and many opt to sprinkle a little sugar on top to balance it out. But there is one variety of grapefruit that needs no additional sugar – the Rio Red grapefruit tree produces the sweetest grapefruits around.

Less popular as a raw fruit due to its tart, slightly bitter flavor, it can be used to flavor fruit salads, fruit cocktails, freshly squeezed fruit juice blends, lemonades, and teas. Due to its high vitamin C content and other biologically valuable nutrients, its citric acid content greatly improves appetite.

Interesting fact

The Rio Red grapefruit is a relatively new variety, discovered by Richard Hensz at Texas A&M in 1976. It was introduced to the public in 1984. Thanks to its sweet taste and juicy red flesh, it has slowly become increasingly popular. Eating Rio Red grapefruit The Rio Red grapefruit has a delicious tangy flavor that is sweeter than the common ruby red grapefruit. The round fruits can be eaten wonderfully directly from the tree, without sugar.

Its pink and red flesh, thanks to the lycopene it contains – the strongest antioxidant carotenoid – increasingly prevents the development of tumors, primarily prostate, lung, and colon cancer. All grapefruits contain limonoids, which stimulate the formation of the detoxifying enzyme glutathione-S-transferase (GST) in the liver, support the immune system in the fight against breast, colon, stomach, and skin cancer, among others, and reduce the risk of lung cancer caused by cigarette smoke.

Use

Half a grapefruit (approx. 120 grams) covers almost sixty percent of the daily vitamin C requirement. The large amount of antioxidant vitamin C binds harmful free radicals, strengthens the immune system, inhibits the development of inflammation and cardiovascular diseases (including stroke), and slows down the aging of cells. It is excellent against colds, as well as for alleviating the symptoms of asthma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis.
