History

In the middle of the last century, Gaspare Campari moved from a village near Milan to the city, right to the arcade opposite the Duomo. The Camparis had been producing their drinks for quite some time by then. The area around the small Milanese shop became the scene of bustling work in those years; King Victor Emmanuel II personally laid the foundation stone for the covered shopping arcade, which connects the Duomo square with the Opera House, the Scala. The Galleria is a typical building of the bourgeois fin de siècle, which serves as a promenade between the temple and the sanctuary of culture, and where cafés and elegant shops offer themselves in the meantime. Here, the company founder Campari nailed the family name to one of the shop vaults.

The sovereign who inaugurated the Galleria entered the decorated Campari café in the year of the Austro-Hungarian Compromise. He tasted the company's bitter drink and suddenly, in his joy, raised it to royal rank - not the family, but the drink. Which, of course, was based on a recipe treated as a professional secret, but they always say so much about it that it contains extracts of 84 different Mediterranean herbs and roots. Just a generation later, in 1903, when the Campari family was about to expand its beverage production plant, they chose a villa near the city, Count Lucini's former house, the Casa Alta, the "high house" built on the Duomo (because that's what the expression means), to move there from the city plant that had become too cramped. For about 70 kilos of gold, they bought the one and a half century old classicist villa with all its outbuildings, furnishings, utensils, and lived there, grew rich, and of course, beautified their family residence according to the taste of the time.
