Nutella® was originally a clever response to a difficult problem: the cocoa shortage following the Second World War.

Pietro Ferrero, an Italian confectioner from Piedmont, created a sweet, spreadable cream made from hazelnuts, sugar and a little of the then rare cocoa. He shaped the mass into a loaf - which could later be sliced and placed on slices of bread. He christened the delicacy 'Giandujot', after the famous carnival character of the time. The Ferrero company was officially founded on 14 May 1946.
