In 1929, Nestlé was given the task of helping to preserve the huge surplus of coffee beans that had built up in Brazil following the Wall Street Crash. Nestlé accepted the challenge. Their coffee expert, Max Morgenthaler, was set the task of creating a delicious cup of coffee, simply by adding water. Max and his team worked hard to find a new way to make a cup of instant coffee that retained the natural flavour of the coffee. In 1938, they found the solution and NESCAFÉ was born. The name NESCAFÉ was created by combining the first three letters of the company name, Nestlé, with the word “café”, a new name for coffee at that time.
