Bombay Sapphire gin is based on a recipe created in 1761. The idea of the blue bottle was born in 1987, thanks to the then master distiller, who added two extra spices, grains of paradise and cubeb pepper, to the original 8-spice recipe. The blue bottle and the name evoke the period of Queen Victoria, when the city of Bombay presented her with a 182-carat blue sapphire stone. This stone can now be seen in the National Museum in Washington.

The company was founded in 1862 by the Spanish-born Don Facundo Bacardi Masso in Santiago de Cuba. In 1877, the company won its first gold medal at the World Exhibition in Spain for its quality. They threw out the rulebook and created their own blends with a revolutionary rum-making process that would change the way rum was made forever.
